It was Snakes Alive! at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center as the 4H Herpetology Club out of Washoe County showed off their reptilian menagerie.

Presenters from Washoe and Carson City wore bearded lizards as broaches or had snakes wrapped around their arms as they presented at the first Family Day at the museum.

Herpetology Club leader Lauren Holdway said the group hopes to find an adult leader to bring a similar club to Carson Valley.

“We do have clubs in Carson City, Lyon County and Fallon and are hoping to get one here soon,” she said. “There are actually quite a few kids who are interested. We just need a leader down here to start a club, and that’s what we’re hoping to get.”

The club has around 60 members some of whom were presenting their cold-blooded friends on Saturday, including three boa constrictors, several snakes and even a couple of tarantulas, which Holdway pointed out are not snakes.

“Our club was started because we realized there were so many kids out there who had a passion and curiosity about these misunderstood critters, and no place for them to come together and share those common interests,” according to the club.

Family Day is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first Saturday of each month at the museum where admission is free. It features a program or event, such as giant bubbles on the green.

The event also features a raffle where people in attendance an enter and win a $100 gift certificate to the museum bookstore.

A drawing will be held on Nov. 14. Family Day is sponsored in part by the Western Nevada College Administration for Children and Families and the Dennis R. Little Trust.
