Three receive University Women scholarships

University Women’s Club of Carson Valley awarded scholarships to three Douglas High School students.

Recipients for 2024 are Ava Wilson, Kalie Mayotte, and Jiovanna Shuman. The young women and their guests were honored at an awards reception where each woman read her autobiographical essay to the members of the club.  Each recipient received a $3,000 scholarship.

Wilson will be attending Grand Canyon University where she will be studying Psychology., Ava served as Student Body President, ASB President and is member of the National Honor Society. She became involved with Living Out Loud, a youth program developed by the Suicide Prevention Network, where she developed a podcast.

Ava volunteers with the Douglas County Sheriff’s office, food closet and works part-time at DST coffee as well as Suicide Prevention.

Mayotte will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where she will be studying aerospace engineering. Kalie has been passionate about aircraft innovation and space exploration since childhood. Many Saturdays, she worked on a project called “Build a Plane,” at the Minden Airport with other teens with similar interests as well as a group of three engineers.  Kalie has been awarded the Sierra Nevada Society of Women Engineers award, was captain of the cross country team. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She works many hours at Walmart.

Shuman will be attending UNR where she will be studying Chemical Engineering. Jiovanna is a member of the National Honor Society, Scholastic Gold, and Silver keys winner. She was given College Board National Hispanic Recognition in 2022-23. She served her community by volunteering at the Carson Valley Food Closet. She has been participating in the Art Club and has been entered into a scholastic and local gallery, showing her original paintings. Jiovanna works at Topaz Lodge Lakeview Cafe 32 hours a week.

The University Women’s Club has been active in the Carson Valley since 1928. Members gather locally each month for a social and informational meeting. Membership is open to women who wish to support students seeking higher education and to participate in learning pursuits for themselves. The annual scholarship awards are financed entirely by private donations from club members. The 2024 committee members are Charlotte Booth, Melissa Ward, Pat Swisher, Kathy Brownlee, Teri Jamin and Melanie Boudreau.
