Carson Valley Health’s Emergency Registered Nurse Melissa Frager was honored with the DAISY Award on Monday.

In acceptance of the award, Frager said it’s nice to know that the work she and her team does matters.

“It’s just really nice to know that what we do matters and knowing that what I do makes a difference in a patient’s life,” she said.

A ceremony was held Monday for Frager, complete with Cinnabons and her whole family and nominator in support at the hospital.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immunes System and the foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick who died of complication of the autoimmune Idiopathic Thromboycytopenia at the age of 33.

The award is given to honor nurses for the compassionate contributions they make everyday and for going above and beyond in their practice.

Frager was nominated by Lisa Filbin for the care Frager provided her mother.

Filbin said she appreciates all that Frager and the hospital does for the community.

“It’s a wondeful feeling to have this available in town so we don’t have to go somewhere else and to feel comfortable and confident to bring your family or yourself and know you’ll get the best care,” she said.

Filbin said Frager cared for her mother who had congestive heart failure.

“She did everything she could to run tests and was very supportive,” said Filbin.

Frager’s supervisor Emergency Department Manager Monica Green said she is proud and excited Frager received this award.

“She is a natural leader and very involved in the unit,” said Green. “She knows a lot of people in the community and she is fair and companionate to patients, even when busy and stressed.”

Frager said ever since she was young, she wanted to be in the hospital atmosphere.

“I was very accident prone and was in and out of hospitals,” she said. “So, I wanted a way to give back and be a part of the atmosphere.”

Frager has been a nurse for 10 years, eight with Carson Valley Health in the emergency department.

Frager said she looks forward to teaching through programs and her practice to make a difference in the lives she treats.

“I want to make a difference in everyone’s lives and changes for patients on a local and national level.”
