Construction on Highway 395 has shifted from day to night as paving started Sunday from Waterloo Lane to Mill Street.
Essentially only the traffic signals at Gilman Avenue and Waterloo are available to cross Highway 395 during the day but will be closed at night.
On Monday, access to the highway was closed from First Street, Mono Avenue, County Road, Church Street, Cemetery Lane, Centertowne Drive, Mill Street, High School Street and Eddy Street.
Waterloo will be closed at night and Gilman will close at 4 p.m. and then reopen in the middle of the night.
According to the state, the plan is to pave the southbound lanes and open all four lanes of the highway over the busy Fourth of July week.
Once the Fourth is over, work to dig up the northbound lanes of the highway, especially in the S-Curve, is expected to begin.
Most of the work on the highway will be from Toler Avenue to Mill Street where 18 inches of roadway and base will be dug up and replaced with new road base and 6 inches of new asphalt. Further south, between Waterloo and Toler, 15 inches will be replaced. For areas north of Mill Street, 3 inches is expected to be removed and repaved.
The $11 million project is expected to be completed by mid-August.
Motorists on Highway 395 won’t be out of the construction zone for long after they leave Gardnerville heading south.
A $21 million project is underway to repave the highway from Ray May Way south to the state
