Genoa, Nev. — Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 395 from the junction with Highway 88 south to the state line. The Holbrook Junction traffic camera was showing snow coming down steadily around 6 a.m. Anticipate chain controls if you’re traveling anywhere over 6,000 feet today.
The first eight hours of the winter storm warning in Carson Valley mostly brought rain, though there was a lot of it. My rain gauge in Genoa showed .9 inches from overnight, but it was well above freezing.
Zephyr Cove Elementary School is closed today due to the weather. Whittell would be closed, but it’s on a four-day week. The rest of Douglas County’s schools will be open with the usual bus routes and times.
Today’s strategic plan meeting was postponed as much to improve the chances of increasing attendance as the weather. Bill Brooks Day in Genoa is also being rescheduled. I haven’t heard from Saturday event organizers, so stay in touch with them if you’re thinking of going to something.
It might also be a great idea to check nvroads.com to see any challenges to a foray into the world will look like. The traffic cameras are particularly useful when they are operational. If things go as predicted, Kingsbury could close tonight.
Snow’s likely before 1 p.m. and then snow and rain with mostly cloudy skies and a high temperature of 45 degrees, according to the forecast. It will be windy out of the southwest at 20-25 mph, gusting to 40 mph. Don’t expect much snow on the ground until tonight.
