While not the driest October on record, the past month’s precipitation was a fairly dismal .03 inches, according to National Weather Service records.
The average for the month is .61 inches, but there are 19 years where October generated either no precipitation or just a trace in the 118 years records have been kept for Minden.
That’s not to say things won’t change significantly. An Election Day 2022 storm brought 5 inches of snow after a relatively dry October. The subsequent 2022-23 water year was the third wettest on record with 18.81 inches, according to the National Weather Service and caused flooding across Douglas County.
The county is hosting its annual flood awareness event 4-6 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Dining Room at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center, located at 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.
“We encourage the community to join us to learn more about flood preparedness and the proactive measures we are taking,” said Courtney Walker, Douglas County Stormwater Program Manager. “Our aim is to equip residents with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe and prepared during flood season.”
Flood Awareness Week is Nov. 10-16.
“With flood season approaching, the event will provide critical information to help residents and local businesses prepare for potential flooding events,” officials said. “Attendees will have the opportunity to learn directly from experts, including representatives from Douglas County Stormwater Management and other key agencies.”
Key flood control projects and resources to be highlighted at the event include:
Interactive booths, watershed models, and up-to-date flood mapping will be available to help residents understand their flood risk and options for flood insurance and safety measures.
