There may be as many 4,000 ballots left to count after Tuesday’s election, Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer Amy Burgans estimated this morning.
She said she doesn’t anticipate releasing those results until later today, so preliminary results released 11:30 p.m. Tuesday will stand for now.
Between those ballots and the ones arriving in the mail over the next two days, Douglas turnout should come close to 85 percent, but Burgans said she’d like to see it get to 90.
“Tuesday was spectacular,” she said. “There is no other word for it. I am so proud of Douglas County. People felt their voice counted here. I was privileged to have the most amazing team to hold such an epic election.”
Burgans said that in Douglas the election went smoothly.
She said the ACLU and tribal organizations sent observers to watch the proceedings.
“We received nothing but praise from those observers for the way the election was run,” she said.
Election workers were able to accommodate voting by Douglas County Jail inmates.
With Election Day over, the next step is to ensure that those mailed ballots with signatures are fixed. They can email a form with a copy of their ID, use the Incode program or visit the Election Office in the historic Douglas County Courthouse in Minden.
“Just cure the ballot, however they want to do it,” she said. “We want to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.”
The clerk’s office will be reaching out to voters to cure their ballots. Residents may also visit govotedouglas.com to look up the list and find updated election results.
