A wind-driven fire prompted evacuations and closed the Mount Rose Highway for several hours on Monday.
Burning in the southern edge of Galena Canyon, the fire closed the highway at Wedge Parkway to Douglas Fir Drive in both directions, according to the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.
Tahoe Douglas firefighters responded to a request for aid with a fire engine and a brush truck, staffed by seven firefighters.
The fire was first reported at around 10:50 a.m., according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch as 50 mph wind gusts blasted the area.
Truckee Meadows estimated the fire was about 65 acres and approximately 3,000 people were affected by evacuations. However, rain and snow was falling on the fire scene around 12:30 p.m.
By 8:10 p.m. all evacuations had been lifted, though firefighters urged residents to exercise caution.
At 10 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters had a line halfway around the fire that was burning grass and understory.
