Despite its relocation, different appearance and changed name, the annual Halloween event hosted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received the same number of trick-or-treaters it had since over its 30-year tenure.

“First off, I want to say thank you to this community for all their support,” Douglas County Sheriff Deputy Mariah West. “Despite the change in location, this year’s Trunk or Treat had the same number of children attending as last year. However, we had more organizations donate and contribute to this event.”

Over the years, the event has moved around, but provided the same safe and fun trick or treat event.

It was originally located in the Douglas High School gymnasium in 1994, before being a part of the CVIC Hall. Most recently, it was held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds along with the haunted house, Fright at the Fairgrounds, built by the sheriff’s department.

Minus the haunted house and the relocation, the event was much the same with the only difference was that sponsors and volunteers decorated their cars instead of creating a booth to pass out candy.

West said both new and returning sponsors and volunteers helped to pass out candy to over 500 children.

There were a total of 18 organizations who donated to the Trunk or Treat event, including Beverly Realty, Carson City Toyota, the Chocolate Shoppe, Carson Valley Inn, Douglas County Sheriff’s Protective Association, Dominos, Douglas Disposal, Eastside Memorial, Edgewood Companies, HPI Inc, Michael Hohl, Pro Group Management, Suicide Prevention Network, FISH, Uniformity, Valley Pediatric Dentistry, Wal-Mart Topsy, and Moxy Up.

A total of 24 organizations attended the event as volunteers passed out candy to over 500 children. Douglas County Animal Control, Anytime Fitness, Community Counseling Center, Carson Valley Health, Carson Valley Food Closet, Douglas County Social Services, Douglas County Alternative Sentencing, Douglas Disposal, Douglas County Juvenile Probation, Family Support Council, Greater Nevada Credit Union, Guns N Ammo, Gut Girl, Kirbyland, Kiwanis Club of Carson, Michael Hohl, Northwest Martial Arts, PAX Church, Partnership Douglas County, The Porch Movement, United Federal Credit Union, Valley Pediatric Dentistry and Carson Valley Sertoma.

“Without the support of these organizations, we would not have been able to host such an amazing event for the community,” said West. “It was amazing to see the community support an event, whether by participating in volunteering their time to hand out candy, donate to the event or attend it with their family and friends.

Every year, from the volunteers who attend the event, also compete for the Best Decorated Display. The winners received goodie baskets which were donated by the Chocolate Shoppe. This year’s winners were first place, Gut Girl ; second place, Partnership of Douglas County, and third place, Guns n Ammo.

All children and families participating in the event were given the option to compete in a costume contest, which is split into 3 categories: Best Toddler, Best Child and Best Family. All winners received gift-cards to businesses within Douglas County. This year’s winner were Preston Dube-Mars for best toddler dressed as Chucky, Shamus Madsen for best child dressed as Dan Marino Player’s Card, and the Hampton family for best family dressed as Peter Pan, Wendy, Tedddy, Captain Hook , and Tinkerbell.

“Thank you to the community of Douglas County for their support,” said West. “We hope to see you all again next year at our Safety Street event.”
