A barn fire at Jacks Valley Road and Centennial in Genoa claimed several animals early Monday morning.

The fire was toned out at 2:48 a.m., and when East Fork firefighters arrived they saw the barn ablaze with fire burning through the roof.

“Initial engine companies used a defensive attack to knock down the bulk of the fire rapidly,” Battalion Chief John Brawley said. “Additional hose lines were stretched to complete extensive overhaul. Unfortunately, the homeowners lost a large number of animals in the fire.”

The two horses that live on the property survived the fire.

Firefighters from Carson Fire Department and Tahoe Douglas helped extinguish the fire.

Brawley said four engines, two water tenders, one ambulance, and several command and utility vehicles were on scene for several hours.

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District provided an engine to cover north Douglas County during the incident. Approximately 26 personnel were on the scene in total, including several East Fork volunteers who provided logistical support.

Two of the horses that live in the barn were roaming in the corral on Monday morning as dawn broke.

No cause for the fire was reported as of press time.
