County Commissioners proclaimed today as Small Business Saturday and more than 20 stores throughout Douglas County are participating in the event.

Hosted by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, the proclamation highlights the vital roll small businesses play in the community’s economic health and cultural vibrancy.

“Our local businesses are the first to sponsor events, teams, and organizations, proving that small businesses are truly the backbone of Carson Valley and communities everywhere,” according to the chamber.

Small Business Saturday encourages residents to support local businesses fostering economic growth and strengthening the local economy.

“For every $100 spent downtown, 68 percent of that stays in your local economy, which means that for every $100, you have $68 staying in your community,” said Main Street Gardnerville Director Jen Tune. “It is a return on investment that is really invaluable to our local economy.”

Local businesses might not have a “door buster” sale going on, but each will participate in the Carson Valley’s Small Business Saturday Passport Program where shoppers can enjoy special offers, win prizes at each stop and complete the shopping passport for a chance at a grand prize, all while supporting local shops.

Visit any participating store for a “Passport to Carson Valley,” or stop by the “Welcome Station” marked with the big red star at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, or visit https://www.carsonvalleynv.org/shopsmall/ to download the passport to print out at home.

Visit each business to receive a stamped passport. Some of the businesses may require a purchase for a stamp and an additional mark may be given for every $10 spent, which provides additional entries into the drawing.

Completed passports with a minimum of 10 marks may be turned into any participating business or at the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce by Dec. 5 to be entered into the contest. Two gift baskets will be awarded. One basket will be won in a random drawing from all passports with 10 or more punches received. The second grand prize basket will be awarded to the passport with the most marks on their passport.

Some participating businesses include Luminary Books, DST Coffee, Sierra Chef, Chocolate Shoppe, 2A Beef, Coffee on Main, Heartstrings Gallery & Gifts, GadZooks, Fresh Ideas, Fish, Cottonwood Creek, Mad Dog Café & Market, Carson Valley Lions Club See’s Candies and more. Visit the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce website for more participating businesses and look for the “Shop Small” sign in store windows.
