Trunk or Treat in the Ranchos on Saturday

Ghosts and goblins set on getting an early start to Halloween are invited to a free Trunk or Treat event this weekend. The fun takes place 3-7 p.m. Oct. 25 in the parking lot of the Sierra View Lanes bowling alley, 1281 Kimmerling Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos.

Hosted by The Grill Next Door, Sierra View Lanes, Jenn West-Fredrickson of Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate, and other local businesses, the Trunk or Treat event invites families to enjoy live music from False Rhythms, a performance by Dance Workshop, seasonal fun and games, and candy hunting.

Jenn and her husband, Dan Fredrickson, own The Grill Next Door and started an annual Trunk or Treat event back when their restaurant was located in the Gardnerville Ranchos. Though they moved locations to the Meadowdale Center last year, West-Fredrickson said they intend to keep the tradition going as a way to celebrate the great family community in the Ranchos and provide an opportunity to connect with local small businesses.

Library hosts scavenger hunt and writing challenge

The Minden branch of the Douglas County Library hosts two Urban Legends-themed scavenger hunts during Halloween week, Oct. 28 through Nov. 2.

A children’s scavenger hunt for those age 0-12 takes place in the kids’ section, while those 13+ can take part in a teen room and main library hunt. Participants can turn in their completed scavenger hunt forms at the front desk and get a prize.

Costumes are encouraged but not required while hunting. Those who stop by the library in costume on October 31 can get a special treat.

The Douglas County Public Library Writing Group invites adults to join their November writing challenge. Throughout the month, participants are challenged to plan, write, or edit their written works with the support and encouragement of other local writers.

Goals will be established at the first meeting on 4:30–6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Minden library. “Write In” gatherings provide an opportunity for attendees to check in with others and work in a positive space among fellow writers. The finale includes a final Write In session followed by a celebration of the progress made. Participants are welcome to bring their preferred writing tools and materials to meetings.

Following the Oct. 30 kickoff, the Write In schedule is as follows:

• 4-6 p.m. Nov. 5

• 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 12;

• 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 23.

Light refreshments and snacks will be served at each meeting, and the finale takes place 10:30 a.m.-Noon Nov. 30.
