Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, so remember to turn the clocks back one hour before heading to bed this Saturday night.

The shortening daylight hours have been quite noticeable these past few weeks with the sun dipping behind the mountains earlier and earlier each evening, and it always takes me a week or two to adjust to the shift. After-dinner walks will be darker for the time being, but this also allows more opportunity for autumn stargazing.

Register now for the Turkey Trot

Registration is open for the eighth annual Carson Valley Turkey Trot, which offers participants the option to either take part in a Thanksgiving Day run/walk at Minden Park or complete a self-paced, virtual 5K during the month of November.

Open to all ages, this fun run supports the Carson Valley Community Food Closet’s mission to achieve food security in Douglas County (thefoodcloset.org), and the Douglas Animal Welfare Group (DAWG)’s efforts to improve animal adoptability; provide responsible pet ownership education; and engage in activities that support animals, their owners, and the Douglas County community (dawgrescue.com).

Virtual participants can walk, hike, jog, or run in a location of their choosing anytime in November (treadmill miles count, too). The in-person Turkey Trot takes place November 28, Thanksgiving Day, at Minden Park, 1601 6th Street. The event schedule is as follows:

7:30-8:45 a.m.- Swag Pick up

7:30-8:30 a.m.- Same day registration open

8:15-8:25 a.m.- Kids’ Turkey Dash warm-up (age 12 and younger)

8:30-8:45 a.m.- Kids’ Turkey Dash

8:45-8:55 a.m.- Turkey Trot warm-up

8:55-9 a.m.- Turkey Trot welcome

9 a.m. - Turkey Trot race start

10 a.m. - Wrap-up

Thanksgiving Day event runners are encouraged to wear costumes, and dogs on leashes are welcome and encouraged.

Organizers said, “We invite the entire community to bring your family, friends, and even your furry companions to this festive event where you can run, walk, or trot for a great cause! Every step you take helps support local families in need and our furry friends in the community.”

To pre-register through Nov. 26, visit thefoodcloset.org and click the “Turkey Trot Registration” link at the top of the page, or go directly to

Cost is $30 per person for either the virtual or in-person event and $20 for the Kids’ Turkey Dash.
