The We Deserve A Better Board group celebrated its first year on Thursday at Minden Park.

Over the course of a year the We Deserve a Better Board group has gained 836 members and over 1,000 followers on Facebook.

The group formulated in August 2023 and has been present at school board meetings, both in-person and online, and held three sign waving rallies to raise awareness throughout the community of their concerns with topics pertaining to the school district, and some concerns about current trustees and district legal counsel.

Some of those concerns include, a series of policies and bylaw suspensions and changes, specifically ones pertaining to public comment and limitations of the superintendent. They have questioned Open Meeting Law procedures, and the decision for firing the district’s 28 year legal counsel, Maupin Cox and LeGoy, and hiring Joey Gilbert Law.

Additionally, the group has sought transparency and requested public records in order to monitor and report on the legal expenses. They advocated for a student representative on the board and supported four trustee candidates.

“The fight is worth it because we ultimately want our school board to focus on what is best for all of our students, their families and our staff,” said member Marty Swisher during the celebration.
