Today, the Sierra Nevada Republican Women are hosting their annual We Will Never Forget 9/11 general meeting featuring an invocation and candlelight benediction by retired Lt. Col. Tony Grady.

The keynote speaker is State Sen. Robin Titus.

The club is one of the few organizations to have observed the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon since the day after the attacks.

That Sept. 12, 2001, dinner was scheduled beforehand, but because all commercial air travel across the country was grounded none of the speakers could attend.

That didn’t stop people from across Douglas County from attending and sharing their feelings and observations.

Sierra Nevada Republican Women meet at noon in the COD Casino Conference Center.

Today marks 23 years since the attacks killed 2,996 people died including 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers.

There are regional events in Carson City and South Lake Tahoe.

A twilight observance at Carson City’s Mills Park is 6 p.m. today.

A light dinner, snacks and refreshments begin at 5 p.m. and end 50 minutes later.

The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe is holding a ceremony to remember the victims of the attack.

“It’s important to continue to remember the innocent victims and first responders who died on that terrible day along with the brave men and women who continue to fight for freedom every day.”

The Legion Post is located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Fallon will host its ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in the courtyard behind city hall.  The Fernley ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at the Out of Town Park east of the downtown corridor and includes the North Lyon County Fire Department, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the city of Fernley.
