On Saturday, the Nevada Press Foundation named former R-C Editor Guy Clifton to the Journalism Hall of Fame.
Clifton, who died on Sept. 7 at age 62, was a last minute addition to the eight journalists named to the Hall of Fame, whose members include Mark Twain.
At Saturday’s luncheon in Reno, former R-C sports reporter and Hall of Famer in his own right, Ray Hagar, talked about Clifton.
“I’m here for Guy, because he was always there for me,” Hagar said. “I saw Guy for the last time about a week ago in a rest home. The last thing I said was ‘Guy, I love you,’ and gave him a fist bump and he said, ‘I love you, too, man.’”
Hagar said he couldn’t imagine anyone saying a negative word about Clifton.
“Everybody loved Guy and Guy loved everybody,” Hagar said. “He was so kind and considerate."
Clifton was editor of The Record-Courier from May 1989 to August of 1990. He is the sixth R-C staffer to have been named to the Hall of Fame. He follows Hagar, Joyce Hollister, Sally Lyda, Bert Selkirk and Delbert Williams.
The Foundation conducted its annual awards banquet at the Depot Brewery in Reno.
Record-Courier Ad Designer Mike McGarvey won three first place awards, leading the newspaper’s awards for the night.
The R-C won best rural special section for the 2023 Carson Valley Almanac. The newspaper also won best rural opinion pages for the fourth year in a row.
The paper won second place among rural papers for general excellence.
Publisher Tara Addeo received a second place for advertising general excellence.
Other second places include email newsletter, general online excellence, community service, page one design and a third place for overall design.
Editor Kurt Hildebrand won first place for editorial writing, second place for business spot news story, feature photo, news photo coverage and multiple photo essay.
Writer Sarah Drinkwine won second place for best business feature story, coverage of underserved communities and third place for entertainment feature story.
Photographer Ron Harpin won second and third place for best sports photos.
The R-C competes with rural publications across the state.
