Genoa, Nev. — A capacity crowd turned out to say farewell to Gardnerville native Mike Henningsen on Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. One parishioner observed that it was the first big funeral service for new Trinity Pastor Jonathan Zoch.

On the other side of Gardnerville, Carson Valley Sertoma welcomed the arrival of autumn in Heritage Park on Sunday with its annual Oktoberfest, which the club has put on for three decades.

Carson Valley native Laurie Hickey conducted a tour of Genoa Cemetery for around 16 people. She said she likes to keep the numbers small for the tour. The Historical Society is hosting a tour of the Garden Cemetery on Oct. 19.

Douglas High students will be embracing the cowboy way today with a West is Best dress-up day to open Homecoming week. They’ll be doing chalk drawings for lunch and voting begins for the staff movie posters in the Commons. Tickets for Saturday’s dance go on sale Tuesday.

It was a relatively quiet weekend on the emergency services beat. A controlled burn up in the northwest part of the Valley was called in around lunchtime on Saturday.

The first weekend of fall was gorgeous with trees beginning to turn and the sky a beautiful Nevada blue. We’re likely to see more of that this week.

Today’s forecast calls sunny skies and a high temperature of 82 degrees, with a light breeze out of the north at 5 mph.
