A Los Angeles couple were sent to prison after a check stealing spree across Nevada and other states.

Keyli Dayana Escalante Enamorado, 21, and Rudy Rocael Socop Domingo, 24, were arrested April 16 with 271 checks valued at over $500,000 located in their vehicle.

According to court documents, the couple stole checks across five counties in Nevada including 26 from Douglas County, 28 from Carson City, 8 from Lyon, 1 from Storey, and 99 from Washoe. An additional 80 were from California and more from other states.

Prosecutor Ric Casper said the check stealing spree may have been part of a bigger organization the couple were roped into.

“The term is called ‘fishing,’” said Casper. “Despite, possibly being part of a bigger organization, the defendants made a trip from California for the purpose of committing a crime.”

Casper said in addition to the checks, devices with a sticky substances used to grab checks from mailboxes among other homemade devices were located inside the vehicle.

“It wasn’t just the stolen checks,” said Casper, “but the personal identification contained within that could be used to commit more crimes.”

The couple each received 3-8 years in prison. They were ordered to pay $1,337.75 each in restitution and were given 161 days credit.
