Family raising money for snowboarder killed at Kirkwood

A 24-year-old Southern California man was identified as the deceased in a snowboard accident at Kirkwood Mountain Resort that occurred on Saturday.

Roman Lacayo of Corona, Calif., was named by the Alpine County Sheriff and Coroner’s office, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported on Tuesday morning.

Deputies responded to the resort at around 12:20 p.m. for a report of a snowboard accident.

At Kirkwood’s Barton Medical Clinic, Deputies observed that Lacayo sustained major head injuries that were not compatible with life.

According to a GoFundMe page organized to help his family with funeral arrangements, Lacayo was an aspiring firefighter.

“On behalf of the full team here at Kirkwood, we extend our deepest sympathy and support to the guest’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time,” said Kirkwood Vice President and General Manager Ricky Newberry.

According to the resort, the incident occurred on an intermediate trail near Chair 4. Ski patrollers responded the incident.
