Genoa, Nev. — Happy 90th birthday to Roberta and Robert Cochran who celebrated with the Genoa clan at Walley’s Hot Springs on Saturday afternoon. The twins were born in Tonopah to then Sonia Cochran and grew up in the Valley. Both are members of the Douglas County High School Class of 1953.

There was a good turnout at Chief Tod Carlini’s retirement party at the Carson Valley Inn on Saturday night. Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., presented Carlini with a flag flown over the capitol on Feb. 7, the date of his retirement.

I knew Carlini and Jacques Etchegoyhen met on the gridiron for Lyon and Douglas, but I didn’t realize that the congressman played as a Senator and graduated the same year as the Chief, 1976.

Between the two justice courts there were nine people appearing in custody from Saturday arrests, ranging from a couple of DUIs to some felony-level drug cases.

There were more birds than birders at the Great Outdoor Bird Count on Saturday morning at the River Fork Ranch. Go to birdcount.org by today to participate.

While commonly known as President’s Day, today is officially Washington’s Birthday. I can’t tell you how often I celebrate the day with a discussion over its legal name. Visit https://www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/facts/the-truth-about-presidents-day if you’re interested in why.

Though if you go to the site, the banner ad above the page all about how it's Washington's Birthday, calls it President’s Day. In Nevada, the state holiday is Presidents Day, but that’s not why the post office and the banks are closed.

The R-C is closed today, though we’re still cooking up Wednesday’s edition back in the kitchen. Feel free to drop me a line.

We got a little surprise precipitation on Sunday with Fredericksburg resident Jeff Garvin reporting .03 inches. I had .11 inches in my gauge north of Genoa since I emptied it on Friday morning. It was snowing up top a little, too.

There’s no indication we’ll see a repeat today, though it might be a little cloudy out. The high temperature is forecast to hit 51 degrees. The 5-10 mph wind is predicted to shift from east to west around 10 a.m.
