The Department of Wildlife is conducting hunter safety classes for Douglas County in March and May.
While hunters 18 years and older may be certified online, those younger than 18 must attend a Nevada hunter education course.
The course consists of independent home study and an in-person certification class. There are two in-person classes being offered this spring in Douglas County.
Classes are March 29 and May 3, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Douglas County Community Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville
There are options for meeting the home study requirement. Students can either complete the Today’s Hunter-Nevada workbook prior to attending a class or they can take one of two online courses. If they choose to complete the workbook, they must bring the completed workbook to the class. Students will not be allowed to attend the class if they have not completed the workbook in full.
The Today’s Hunter-Nevada workbook and student manual (reference for completing the workbook) may be obtained free from any NDOW office. Students may also pick up a workbook and study guide from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday or at Sportsmen’s Warehouse-Carson City, free of charge.
Students have two choices for internet courses: www.huntered.com and www.huntercourse.com. Both online courses charge an additional fee over the basic $5 class fee. Students must bring their 100-percent completed workbook or Nevada Online Course Completion Confirmation (printed off the hunter-ed.com website upon successful completion) to the class to gain admittance. Students should anticipate the workbook or online course taking at least 10-15 hours to complete; usually about 2 hours each night for a couple weeks.
To register, visit the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Hunter Education web site, Upcoming Events - Hunter Education. Even though the class will appear on the web site, registration will not open until 30 days prior to each class. Classes are limited to 15 students.
It is highly suggested students bring a sack lunch and something to drink, as there will not be time for a lunch break.
