Chain controls are in effect at Lake Tahoe as law enforcement aids people caught off guard by the sudden snow.

Douglas County deputies are reporting multiple vehicles are spinning out in Zephyr Cove and are calling for sand on Highway 50.

There were no injuries or crashes reported there at 2:30 p.m., but that could change.

Controls were implemented over Kingsbury at 1:34 p.m. and from Carson City to South Lake Tahoe shortly after 2 p.m.

Rain turned to snow around 2:30 p.m. in Genoa.

It might rain later today, but the wind is definitely making its presence felt in Carson Valley this morning.

A wind gauge along Highway 88 just south of Mottsville clocked two 71 mph gusts at 10 and 10:30 a.m. today.

Sheridan Acres recorded a maximum wind gust of 59 mph while further north a gauge at Walley’s Hot Springs read 54 mph.

Fredericksburg resident Jeff Garvin reported a 45 mph gust at 9:52 a.m.

The automated weather station at Minden-Tahoe Airport had a top gust of 44 mph as a new front blew into Western Nevada.

East Fork firefighters responded to a report of wires down at Muller Lane and Highway 395 at 10:32 a.m. There were no outages associated with the call, so they might have been communications wires. East Fork cleared the call by 10:52 a.m. NVenergy.com reported no Douglas County outages as of 11 a.m.

A high-profile vehicle ban is in effect for Interstate 580 north of Washoe Valley.

A fast moving cold front is sweeping through Western Nevada this with possibilities of ridge top winds of up to 100 mph.

Winds are expected to slow down this afternoon as cloudiness increases, bringing a chance of rain, and even a few snowflakes this evening.

A wind advisory is in effect for Carson Valley and most of Western Nevada through 7 p.m.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin. As of 11 a.m., Kingsbury Grade is dry and sunny, but that could change quickly. Visit nvroads.com for updated travel conditions.
