Gregory Raymond Ward, 63, is being held in Northern Nevada Correctional Center while he recovers from the self-inflicted gunshot wound he suffered on Dec. 16, 2024.
Ward is facing a charge of murder in the first degree, and due to the possibility he might face the death penalty, a second attorney was appointed to back up Teresa Ristenpart, who said she was retained for the investigative phase of the case.
Max Stovall will serve as second chair until prosecutors determine what their course of action will be.
District Attorney Mark Jackson said he had no objection to appointing Stovall second chair, but that it was his information that Stovall wouldn’t be eligible for first chair in a death penalty case.
Ristenpart said Ward was released into custody on Tuesday and was concerned about his medical treatment at the prison.
She said she would prefer to have him held in the jail.
Both East Fork Justice of the Peace Paul Gilbert and Jackson indicated that would be entirely up to the sheriff.
