A man, who was originally scheduled to go to trial next week, will instead go into the custody of the Nevada Department of Corrections for 28-72 months.

Benjamin Alexander McCammon, 29, received the maximum sentence after he admitted in January to a count of coercion in connection with a Feb. 4, 2024, incident where he destroyed a woman’s cell phone to keep her from contacting authorities.

McCammon was originally charged with sexual assault in connection with the case.

Attorney John L. Arrascada, called the group “a crazy bunch of characters” including McCammon, who were partying in a VIP Suite at Harrah’s where they were consuming large amounts of alcohol. The group went down to the casino to gamble and the woman returned to the room. McCammon followed her and allegedly tried to have sex with her. There was a fight and McCammon took her phone and destroyed it, which was recorded on security video.

McCammon told District Judge Tod Young that he took her phone because he thought she took his phone and wanted to get her back.

“It turns out my phone was in my pocket,” he said.

Arrascada said McCammon chose a life of “drinking, drugging and committing crimes,” but that he was a talented artist.

He said that McCammon wasn’t asking for probation but sought a 12-30-month sentence.

McCammon also is recommended for 12-30 months in a Washoe County theft case where he stole a backpack full of baby anacondas, according to Arrascada. He has four felony convictions, according to court documents.

McCammon is also facing a hold out of California.

McCammon said he was doing a lot of work on himself while in custody for the past 295 days awaiting his case.
