Bob Butler, 83, passed away in his sleep at home on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in Carson City, Nevada, of natural causes. He was born June 2, 1939, to Gordon and Anna Enid Butler in Pasadena, California.
On June 28, 1957, Bob married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Maxine Mewes,
in Tujunga, California, one week after graduating from Verdugo Hills High School. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2017.
Bob started his love for ranching and the beauty of northern Nevada when he spent high school summers working in Hope Valley at the Heitman Ranch. Bob and Maxine moved to Carson City, Nevada, in 1965 where they became lifelong residents. They created and operated Butler Meat Company and Hickory Hog Restaurant and Market. Bob ran and taught students at the UNR Meat Plant for 25 years. Before his retirement, he did outside sales for Ponderosa Meat Company.
Bob was also very active in the community including the Carson City Chamber of Commerce
(Board of Directors,) California Association of Meat Processors (Past President,) American Association of Meat Processors (Past Director and Judge,) Nevada Beef Council, as well as 25 years with the Reno Rodeo Association (Director Emeritus.)
Bob was known for his sense of humor. He would refer to himself as “SOB” or Sweet Ole Bob
and created funny weekly advertisements for the meat market in the Nevada Appeal. When creating Butler Meat Company in 1973, he received national attention for his Help Wanted advertisement for Cattle Rustler’s to work in a new meat market in Carson City. In his youth, his nickname was “Squeak.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and wife.
Survivors include brother Michael Butler (Sally) and sister Patricia Lashier; children Jamie (Butler) Wilson of Sparks, NV; Juli (Butler) Hurin of Greensboro, NC; James (Jim) Butler of Dayton, NV and their spouses Dennis, Alex, and David; five grandchildren, Sarah, Kathryn, Ellen, Geoffrey, Robert; five great-grandchildren Emerald, Iris, Liam, Reagan, and Lincoln.
