On September 4, 2023, our beautiful, brave Dan passed away after a long battle with cancer, with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Elsa Culbert of McGill, NV, brother Mike Culbert of Portola, CA, nephew Brendan Culbert of Houston, TX and grandnephew Joe Culbert of Reno, NV.
Dan was born in East Ely, NV, on August 31, 1945, and lived in McGill where his family owned and operated the McGill Drug Store. Many days were spent at the store greeting friends and drinking cokes at the soda fountain.
Dan attended McGill Grade School and graduated from White Pine High School in 1963, where he played sports and was a member of the band. He pursued a degree in Economics at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, where he graduated in 1967. The Bay Area opened a whole new world of school friendships. Combined with his childhood friends in McGill, he possessed beautiful relationships that were everlasting. Dan felt one could never have too many friends.
Drafted out of college, he served in Vietnam as a Specialist 5 rank. It was during his R&R that he went to Honolulu to join his fiancé, Barbara Secoy. The two were married at Our Lady of Peace on the island on December 27, 1968. He returned days later to serve out his time in the military. Settling in Carson City, he worked for the State of NV at the Employment Security Division, DETR as an Economist for 30 years, retiring in 2001.
Dan was a sports enthusiast. He supported youth sports, coaching his daughter in softball and his son in little league and community basketball. He was an avid fan of the St. Mary’s Gaels basketball teams and the San Francisco Giants. He had a passion for golf, joining the Department of Transportation League and was an active member of Lightning W. Ranch. A highlight of his golfing experiences were yearly trips with friends to visit courses on the West Coast.
Dan’s love of music was lifelong. His favorites ranged from Big Band hits to the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and John Prine. Dan sang in the St. Teresa’s church choir where he was a member for 52 years.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 55 years and his three children: Jennifer Jones (granddaughter Avery) of Sparks, NV; Angela Culbert (son in-law Ryan Bianchi, grandson Liam) of Seattle, WA; Patrick Culbert (daughterin-law Julianne, grandson George, and granddaughterto-be) of Sacramento, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Drs. Steven and Susan Culbert of Houston, TX; niece Colleen Weinschenker and family of Marietta, GA; nephew Kevin Culbert and family of Austin, TX; nephew Greg Culbert and family of Anchorage, AK; nephew Scott Culbert and family of Marysville, CA; niece Susie Smith and family of Rocklin, CA; brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Judy Drum of Chilcoot, CA; and many cousins and extended family.
His family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of Dan’s doctors and nurses who cared for him over the last five years, including Dr. Reddy and team at Cancer Care Specialists for their kindness and compassion.
