George Avila U.S. Veteran

July 14, 1956 - May 31,2024

George Avila, of Gardnerville, NV passed away on 5/31/2024 due to complications from a heart valve replacement surgery.

George was born July 14, 1956, in Rosais, Sao Jorge, Azores, the youngest of 14 children.

He and his family came to the United States in 1960. He married his wife Merrilee in 1976, and they had 2 children, Sherra and Justin.

George was in the Air Force from 1975 to 1982, where he served as a pharmacy technician. He left the Air Force to continue his education as a pharmacist. He graduated from the University of Washington, School of Pharmacy, Seattle, in 1988. He was a pharmacist for 33
years, working as a hospital pharmacist then as a retail pharmacist with Rite Aid from where he retired in 2021.

In the years since his retirement, he traveled across the United States 3 times with Merrilee. He visited friends and family in the Midwest, New England, Virginia, Texas, New Mexico, California and Nevada. He loved traveling; if it wasn’t a big trip across the country, it was riding his Can-Am Spyder through the back roads of Nevada and California with Merrilee. He was a great woodworker, he created beautiful gifts for his family. He enjoyed sailing, but above all he loved spending time with his family.

George is survived by his wife Merrilee, daughter Sherra, son Justin, daughter-in-law Odemaris, granddaughter Sophia, 8 brothers and sisters: Antonino, his wife Theresa, Angelica, Margaret, her husband Lewis, John, his wife Sharon, Paul, Manuel, his wife Diana, Mary, her husband David, and Duarte and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on June 23, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Morgan Hill Masonic Center: 380 W Dunne Ave, Morgan Hill, CA 95037. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association: PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692, or
