Born on June 12, 1945, in New England, John was a man of spirit and adventure. In 1972, he embarked on a cross-country journey on his Vespa, eventually making his way to Gardnerville, NV. It was there that John met Sharkey Begovich, who offered him a job as a cook at Sharkey’ Casino. This opportunity marked the beginning of John’s illustrious culinary career.
John became renowned for his prime rib, attracting people from all around to Sharkey’s Casino to taste his legendary dish. His dedication to his craft and his community was evident in the countless hours he spent ensuring everyone was well-fed. One of his most memorable contributions was during Serbian Christmas, where he generously fed hundreds of people—an event that long-time residents fondly remember.
In his later years, John found solace and friendship at the Douglas County Senior Center, where he had his own special spot in the Grandview Dining Room, surrounded by the warmth of companionship and the familiar faces of those who had come to cherish him. Friends and staff alike ensured his needs were met as his health declined, offering not just assistance, but genuine care and support, a testament to the deep bond he had forged within the community.
