David VanGate Bernard, 86, passed away on October 14, 2024, at Skyline Estates. Before moving to Skyline Estates, David lived in his Carson City home for 60 years. David was born in Chico, California, to Muriel (Stanford) Bernard and Paul Edwin Bernard May 26, 1938, the youngest of three children. He graduated from Princeton High School in Princeton, California in 1956, and attended Chico State University after graduation.
David enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 2, 1957, serving as an electronics and communications engineer in the air defense units, RADAR stations in Goose Bay, Labrador and Mount Lemon, Arizona, and was honorably discharged from his service on March 16, 1961.
David was hired by IBM in Sacramento, California on April 18, 1961, as a customer service engineer, an transferred to Carson City, Nevada in 1964 where he retired on December 31, 1996. In his over 35 year career with IBM, David received numerous “Means” awards (IBM Means Service) for his outstanding customer service and dedication to the company.
He was proceeded in death by his brother, Richard Bernard, and sister Patricia (Bernard) Schroeder. David is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marcia (Bergevin) Bernard, daughters Kelly Mitchell (Harvey), Tara Schanafeldt (Kevin), and sons Michael Bernard (Malissa) and Brian Bernard (Brandee), as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
David was a member of the Carson City First United Methodist Church. He was a member for over 50 years with Carson Lodge #1F&AM and over 50 years with Esther Chapter #3, Order of the Easter Star.
The family is extremely grateful to the providers at Skyline Estates and A+ Hospice Care for the kindness and attention given to David while he was under their care.
A memorial service will be held in Carson City, Nevada at the First United Methodist Church on November 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, David requested the First United Methodist Church in Carson City and the Shriners Hospital be remembered.
