Charles “Chuck” Preston Pope, age 73, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024, at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of deep Christian faith, Chuck leaves behind a legacy of love,
service, and a profound appreciation for the great outdoors.
Though we mourn his loss, we rejoice in the knowledge that he has been welcomed into the arms of his Savior. As 2 Timothy 4:7 says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Chuck has finished his race, and we take comfort in the promise of his eternal reward.
Born on January 9, 1951, in Palo Alto, California to Jim and Eva Pope, Chuck lived a life rooted in faith, integrity, and a passion for nature. He shared 50 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Marilyn, with whom he built a family centered on love, faith, and togetherness. Chuck was the proud father of two children: Justin and Rebecca. He was a devoted and loving grandfather to his five grandchildren Makayla, Weston, Jayden, Eva and Reagan.
Chuck had a deep love for the outdoors, which guided both his career and personal life. He retired in 2006 after more than 30 years of dedicated service with the Bureau of Land Management, where he worked to protect and preserve the lands he cherished. His passion for conservation continued through his work with the Nevada Land Trust, furthering his commitment to safeguarding open spaces and natural resources for future generations.
At Hilltop Community Church, Chuck was a faithful servant, helping on the Elder Board and Mission Team. He also served as a Shepherd in one of the church’s small home fellowship groups for many years. In the Douglas County community, Chuck loved helping at the Backpack Buddies Program, assisting children in local schools. Chuck loved fly fishing, cycling, running, backpacking and hiking.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his son, Justin (Shelley) Pope and their children Weston (14) and Reagan (9); his daughter Rebecca (Anthony) Reynolds and their children Makayla (16), Jayden (13), and Eva (11). Chuck is also survived by his brother, Jim (Susan) Pope, his sister, Elizabeth Pope, brother-in-law George (Jayne) Jaynes, and sister-in-law Beverly Walsh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Eva Pope.
A celebration of life for Chuck will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Hilltop
