Soaring eagle captures first place

Lisa Minter decided to try out a new zoom telephoto lens when she spotted a bald eagle soaring about 200 feet overhead in the Pine Nut Mountains.

"I had a heck of a time getting it in focus," she told fellow members of the Carson Valley Photo Club on March 11 after her photo took first place in the organization's monthly contest.

Second place in the March contest went to longtime Gardnerville resident Ron Darr, whose winning digital image captured vineyards covering the rolling hills near Placerville, Calif. He titled his shot, "Not Napa." Judges said they were impressed by the lines created by the vineyards. Darr said he shot the scene early on the morning of March 1, then returned to capture it in a different light shortly before sunset. The later picture coped the club's red ribbon.

"Morning Chores" is the title given to Debbie Marsh's photo of a neighbor feeding his cattle. Marsh said she heeded his warning to be careful of the bull. Her picture won third place.

The theme for the contest was Raptors or Agriculture. For April, photos will depict images of water.

Lynda Chen'e was named outstanding club member of the year for her work to help fellow photographers improve. Outstanding photographer of the year went to Kathy Port.

This month's winning photos are on display at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden, where the club's next meeting is 6 p.m. April 8. Information at cvphotoclub.com or 783-8600.
