The full staff of Tangles Hair Studio is ready to give haircuts for a good cause. The Gig 4 Wigs Cut-a-thon on Saturday features a Hawaiian barbecue, live music, raffles, chair massages and $10 hair cuts.

The fundraiser is to provide wigs and head coverings at no cost to those who may have lost their hair during cancer treatments.

Jennifer Wing said she's expanding the hair studio to include a room with "tons" of wigs and head coverings such as turbans, caps and scarves.

"I will have a room set aside to carry wigs and head coverings at no cost to patients undergoing treatment. The cut-a-thon benefits all that," Wing said.

"But the cut-a-thon is for anyone needing a haircut. If someone chooses to donate their hair, we'll send it to Locks of Love for them at no charge. We will also have chair massages that day with all donations being added to the wig fund."

The Gig 4 Wigs Cut-a-Thon is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Tangles Hair Studio, 1255 Highway 395 in Gardnerville. There will be raffles, food and music by Da Big Tsunami. Haircuts are offered at a suggested donation of $10 each.

Raffle items donated by businesses in the community include massages, weaves, candles, gift baskets, gym memberships, quilts, diapers, horseback riding lessons and cafe certificates. Raffle tickets are $5 each.

Wing offers her services to the Carson Valley Medical Center's Look Good, Feel Better program for women undergoing cancer treatment to learn about cosmetics and ways to deal with hair loss. Workshops are held every other month at Tangles.

She got the idea for a private room to display wigs when she had an appointment with a woman who was losing her hair.

"I was shaving someone's head in full view of everyone in the salon. It was so unprivate, so unpersonable," she said. "Now with the new room, I will be able to fit patients with wigs and do special haircuts. Privacy will be available if they need it."

Wing offers the first two haircuts free to people whose hair is just growing back. She expects the wig room to be complete by May 1.

"The fundraiser is to hopefully raise enough money to buy wigs and head coverings to give to patients. The larger the turnout, the more pieces we can buy," she said.

"Even if you don't need your hair cut, come in and bring your wallet. It's all going to a good cause."

The American Cancer Society's Look Good, Feel Better program at Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville is offered to women undergoing cancer treatment. Participants receive a gift package of skin care products, sunscreen and make-up.
