Positive energy, best smiles, kind hearts and a love for the library, are just some of the appreciative remarks staff of the Douglas County Library shared with their volunteers during their appreciation luncheon Thursday at the Carson Valley Inn.

During the luncheon Library Director Tim DeGhelder said the turnaround of volunteers he has witnessed since coming on as the director in 2022 has been impressive; going from zero hours recorded to 1,500 hours by the end of 2023.

“I love seeing Douglas County residents being a part of the Douglas County Public Library,” said DeGhelder.  “You (the volunteers) took the time to complete background checks, figure out what you like to do and create a schedule to make us part of your lives and we appreciate it greatly.”

Douglas County Manager Jenifer Davidson also shared her appreciation for the library volunteers.

“Volunteers are the life blood of our community,” she said. “Organizations like the library, other public agencies and nonprofits cannot provide the services that they do, to the extent they do and touch so many lives in this community without volunteer assistance, so thank you so much on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, and myself and my team. You guys have a wonderful team at the library and you all are a big part of that.”

In addition to the appreciation the staff had for the volunteers, the volunteers shared what they loved about being part of the Douglas County Public Library, including tea party events, sharing their dogs with children during the Reading Paws program, free movies and popcorn, book sales, and experiencing the excitement of children when they read.

“It’s a place to gather for reading, knowledge, and fun,” said a volunteer. “There’s a sense of community, a place to make friends, and knowing you are making a difference.
