Volunteers are invited to participate in a workday morning at Heritage Park Gardens 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Located at 1461 Ezell St. in Gardnerville, the 1.5-acre community garden originated in 2011 and is a project of Main Street Gardnerville.

Developed in conjunction with the Town of Gardnerville, the gardens offer beds that can be rented during the growing season, a walking labyrinth, children’s garden, large-scale chess and checkerboard, gazebo, and recognition wall honoring the garden’s volunteers.

The gardens are maintained by a volunteer committee and through donations. The vision for the garden is to “provide a place to learn, grow, share and beautify, to cultivate and nurture our community” (mainstreetgardnerville.org/heritage-park-gardens/).

Come prepared for the workday with gloves and water; all other tools and implements will be provided.

For more information, email MSG at mainstreetgardnerville.org.

Elks host chili competition

The contest is open to all cooks, and all chili and salsas will be made fresh onsite. Tasting kits are $15, and tasting starts at 3 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded for Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice.
