The Quilt House owners stitch together a retirement plan

After celebrating 25 years in May, The Quilt House owners Janet and Gary Pierce have decided to stick the needle and hang up the quilts, at least when it comes to the store.

Gary said he and Janet are ready to move on to the next step and retire from the “brick-n-mortar” quilt and sewing store.

“It was just time,” he said. “You just know when it is time.”

Since opening its doors in 1999, The Quilt House has held a reputation of being the go-to for various projects and were featured in the Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sample in 2004 and the premier issue of the Best of Quilt Sampler in 2007.

“We are grateful for the years we have had, the people we have met, and the projects we have helped be a part of,” said Janet.

Janet and Gary said customers would come from as far as Sacramento and Los Angeles for their unique and creative products, including the “quilt kits.”   

“We want to express our gratitude to all our customers for their support and friendships since we opened our doors,” said Gary. “And a very special thanks to all of our staff that have worked with us throughout these last 25 years. They have been a very important part of the success of The Quilt House.”

Many of the customers became regulars and friends to the Pierces and since the word got out about the store’s retirement, many have come to bid farewell.

“It’s been bittersweet,” said Janet. “This is the time to say goodbye to our customers.”

The last day for The Quilt House will be Sept. 14, which the Pierces plan to have a farewell celebration at the store.

“We plan to have some cake and spend time with anyone who wants to stop by and just say our goodbyes,” said Janet.

Though the store front is closing, The Quilt House will still be available online while they travel, participate in Quilt Shows, and visit with their families.

“We won’t be entirely gone, just a bit of slower pace is what we are looking for,” said Janet.

The Quilt House will continue services online and Sierra Sewing and Vacuum in Carson City will become the Bernina sub-dealer for Minden, Gardnerville, and Carson City.

 “Sierra Sewing and Vacuum have promised to take great care of all of customers,” said Gary. “They will be opening their new and expanded store very soon and will be expanding their fabric lines and available notions.”

A closing sale is running now through Sept. 14 where everything in the store is on sale including fixtures, equipment, antiques, best prices on Bernina and Koala products and the “business” itself, according to Gary. 

“Janet and I feel giving our best price on everything is our way to say thank you to all of our customers,” said Gary.
