Genoa, Nev. — A significant percentage of the population of Markleeville turned out on Sunday to dedicate the Archives Building to longtime Alpine County Historical Society member, archivist and R-C contributor Nancy Thornburg.

I spent a little time with the Death Ride down at Topaz on Saturday morning. It was absolutely gorgeous out and fun taking pictures of the riders zipping down from Monitor Pass. I got word that around 1,500 participated in the ride.

Getting through construction at 5 a.m. Saturday was a breeze when there aren’t any other cars on the road. The traffic lights were letting one side go at a time, which may be partially responsible for the backups occurring during the busy portions of the day.

With the construction opening and closing roads along 395 at different intervals during the day, it’s a good idea for people who have to travel through there to sign up for the alerts by texting “DOWNTOWN” to 866-540-8466, or by calling (775) 379-8777.

The county is proposing banning truck traffic from Nye Drive to the end of Johnson Lane in a pretty clear response to the Painted Rock mining effort. The ordinance revision adding Johnson Lane will be introduced on Thursday.

Besides the big outages that struck the northern Douglas County corridor on Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning it was a reasonably quiet weekend, despite the red flag warning.

The changing weather pattern brought a little bit more smoke to Western Nevada. Airnow.gov shows the air quality at the one gauge in Minden barely in the moderate range. Most of the rest in Carson Valley are in the mid-good range.

Our heat wave saw eight straight days of temperatures of 100 degrees or warmer with three new temperature records set for July 7, 8 and 12. I don’t know if the length is a record, but it sure seems like it should be.

There’s an outside chance we’ll see showers or thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The forecast high temperature of 91 degrees is pretty mild after the last week or so. The wind will pick up out of the west at 5-10 mph.

I’m out of the office until Thursday this week. I’ll be checking my email periodically and forwarding my voice mails.
