Preliminary results were kind to incumbents in Douglas County with Commissioners Danny Tarkanian and Mark Gardner leading their opponents.
Results posted to the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer’s office show Tarkanian has a 515-vote lead over challenger Jim McKalip, who received 3,390 votes as of 10 p.m. Tuesday and came closest to toppling his rival.
Unlike Gardner and Tolbert, Tarkanian still faces a challenge from nonpartisan Brian Dempsey and Democrat Jason Garrett Gibson in the General Election in November.
Gardner leads main opponent Michael Tanner 4,827-1,795 votes. Dean Paris, who dropped out of the race, still received 430 votes, no where near enough to change Gardner’s 3,032-vote lead.
In District 5, Nathan Tolbert led Janet Freixas by 2,379 votes, having received more than twice his rival’s votes.
Rep. Mark Amodei led Foothill resident Fred Simon 4,337 to 2,973 in Douglas County. Amodei received 64.5 percent of the total vote in Congressional District 2.
Sam Brown won the Republican nomination for his second attempt at the U.S. Senate. He and Jacky Rosen will meet in the general election.
There are around 75 voters listed in the cure list, not enough to change any of the current election results.
Voters have until June 17 to contact the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer’s Office to cure their signatures. A list of voters is at govotedouglas.com along with results from Tuesday.
Turnout for the primary was exceedingly light this year, with only a third of Republicans casting a ballot despite having the most contentious races.
Nearly 32 percent of Democrats, who had a U.S. Senate race, voted in the election and 6.56 percent of nonpartisan and other parties bothered to vote in the University Board of Regents and State School Board races that appeared on their ballot.
Regent Carol Del Carlo won her race for Regent while Angela Orr was leading in the school board race.
