Genoa, Nev. — We have a few days to disconnect hoses, ponder the fate of the tomato crop and gather firewood before what’s predicted to be a hard freeze arrives early Friday morning. With low temps forecast in the low 20s for two days, I doubt we’ll be able to ride it out.

A man with a medical condition strayed across Main Street in Genoa and bumped into the state parks pickup parked near the blacksmith’s shop 3:30 p.m. Friday. Rescuers also responded to a collision at Mottsville and 88 and something near the Sunridge Golf Course over the next 90 minutes.

A rare October water rescue occurred 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Zephyr Cove with two people foundering a quarter mile offshore. Everyone made it out safe, and a change in the weather should at last bring beach season to a close.

Backyard burning opens today in the East Fork Fire Protection District. Go to https://eastforkfire.org and scroll down a bit and the downloadable permit is on the port side.

Douglas County’s Comprehensive Trails Plan will be honored with the DeBoer Excellence in Planning Award for Outstanding Rural Plan or Project this coming weekend.

A key player in that trail planning, the Carson Valley Trails Association, is having 5K run on the James Lee Loops 8:30-10-30 a.m. Saturday. Visit carsonvalleytrails.org for more information.

The skies above Carson Valley keep on giving with a comet visible over the Sierra on Sunday evening. Between it and the aurora, I’m awash in celestial photography.

Today’s Columbus Day holiday means no mail, and federal offices will be closed, but otherwise it will be business as usual in the Silver State. Here we’ll observe Nevada Day with closures on Oct. 25.

This year marks Nevada’s 160th birthday, having been granted statehood on Oct. 31, 1864. We’ll celebrate by sending costumed children out into the world to forage for candy and carving faces into orange gourds.

Today is expected to be sunny and quiet with a high temperature around 78 degrees, which is pretty close to where we’ll be on Tuesday.
