Republicans respond

Editor:

It’s definitely election season. How many signs have you seen defaced or taken? How many people have been in your face because you believe in a different way or support a different candidate? Have the hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising started to have you question Sam Brown, Mark Amodei, or Donald Trump? I hope the answer to the last question is no. But, if you have any doubts, give me a call. I’ll walk you through the truth behind the attacks and reinforce why you should vote out the Democrat administration that is ruining this once truly great country.

The Central Committee is the local authorized Republican Party in Douglas County. The committee consists of Republicans elected from all of the precincts in Douglas County to represent their neighbors. We exist to help get Republicans elected that are aligned with our party’s values and principles, our platform. We do not tolerate violence, and we seek to understand the truth. Even in these tough times, bullying, stating half-truths, and hitting emotional buttons that turn others into enemies are not the tactics of the party.

We hosted a very successful Town Hall on the ballot initiatives last Monday evening with solid arguments and enlightened insights into what is behind each initiative. Our recommended positions are summarized on our white “slate card.” Our card includes all Republicans we know are running for office and identified those that the organization chose to endorse.

You likely received a copy of our slate card in the mail. Unfortunately, after it was mailed we were notified of a misspelling of candidate Jeff Schemenauer’s name - his correct name and email are shown on the attached card - we regret this error.

While the DCRCC promotes all Republicans, other unofficial groups choose to be less inclusive, sometimes presenting their materials as official Republican communications. Don’t be fooled — only the white slate cards and the literature bags that accompany them are official Republican Party materials. If you receive any unofficial literature, let us know and we’ll make sure you get the official info including our white slate card of all Republicans and their material that they provided for us to distribute.

If you’d like to help with Douglas Republican Party efforts to deliver information to your neighbors, please contact us through our website at douglasgop.org. We’ll have walk lists prepared for you and provide the literature needed by voters. We also have signs available at our office that you can offer to neighbors who want to support our candidates.

Seriously, we need your help now. The Governor and our Republican Senator and Assemblyman will need your help next spring to ward off the far-left Dems in Carson City. Get involved now to bring in a victory for Donald Trump and his team all the way down the ballot.

Voting for Schemenauer

Editor:

I am writing to express great concern over apparent “typos” on the Republican “Slate Card” mailed to over 20,000 citizens of Douglas County. Candidate for East Fork Justice of the Peace, Jeff Schemenauer’s campaign email was misspelled AND his name was misspelled, missing not just one, but two letters.

To be clear, Jeff’s name is spelled “Jeff Schemenauer,” not “Jeff Shemenaur” as listed on the “Slate Card” created and mailed out by the Douglas County Central Committee.

Jeff’s correct email address is jeffschem4judge@gmail.com, not “jeffshem4judge.com,” missing the “c,” as listed on the “Slate Card.”

Regardless of intent, if any, these “typos” have created damage to Jeff’s campaign. New cards cannot be printed. Over 20,000 residents have wrong information about Jeff’s name and email. By the way, these “typos” come on the heals of issues with Jeff’s campaign signs and stealing of one of his campaign car magnets. It has been a tough journey and it feels like the hits just keep on coming.

Therefore, I ask the citizens of Douglas County to ask questions, to do your research, and really get to know Jeff Schemenauer and make a decision as to who you want for your next East Fork Justice of the Peace.

In my opinion, it matters more that Jeff has dedicated nearly his entire adult life to keeping all of us safe, risking his life to protect Douglas County for over 25 years. He’s a dedicatedpublic servant and patriot, having also served in the US Army and the United Nations Honor Guard in Korea.

Jeff is wired to serve and protect. He has a proven track record of serving Douglas County and our Great Country with honor, dedication, and integrity for over 30-years combined!

Jeff’s the kind of person we want as our next East Fork Judge because his view of the law and criminal justice system is vast and unique. Plus, Jeff’s had years of experience interacting with the courts and court staff. He’s done this as a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy, Detective, and Sergeant. His 10-years in detectives plus 2-years as the Sergeant in charge of court services gave him an up close and personal view and understanding of court procedures, the rules of evidence, and how the Justice Court Judge makes decisions and rulings. This is an incredible advantage for a new judge, in my opinion.

In summing up, I support and I am voting for Jeff Schemenauer for East Fork Justice of the Peace, not only because I believe him to be the most uniquely qualified but he’s also the candidate with proven dedication to Douglas County. I know because he’s demonstrated his dedication and service for the past 25 years. Again, I encourage everyone to learn about Jeff. Do your research and I believe you will come to the same conclusion.

Libertarian for Casselberry

Editor:

I am a libertarian. As such, I believe education is best served when parents are free to enroll their children in educational programs that fit their children’s needs. I also believe that taxes should be minimal and that those charged with spending our tax dollars show the fiduciary responsibility that is consistent with the ideal of citizen servitude that is established by our country’s constitution.

A recent study suggest that citizens 35 and under are woefully undereducated in basic civics, what it means to be a citizen. Yet that same generation has a vast understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion– three things that have no root in our constitution. They have an inadequate understanding of math and the use of the English language as well as a huge gap in civics leaving them unprepared for the workforce and ignorant of the political system. They are taught under a system of rule and rulers. They understand neither civil discourse nor civil disobedience.

This leads me to Antoinette Casselberry. If you look at her past, you’ll find the kind of servant leader that we desperately need. Antoinette has put people ahead of politics throughout her life. She gets that the School Board is supposed to be the advocate for children and their parents. Unlike those that want to force progressive values on kids, Ms. Casselberry will insure that children are prepared for the future as young adults. She will address the issues that really affect the community like absenteeism, low graduation rates and failing test scores.

I, for one, want leadership in our School District to be accountable for ever penny of our tax dollars. I don’t want social experimentation and engineering to influence our children. Ms. Casselberry shares this vision with me. And because of that, I personally endorse her for the Douglas County School board.

Miller, Gneiting best qualified

Editor:

The Town Hall Debate held Oct. 9 was an excellent opportunity to hear, witness and question the choices we have in Douglas County for this voting cycle. I was most interested in the School Board candidates as so much false information has been circulating with finger pointing and outright lies on various candidate’s (Englekirk and Casselberry) promotional flyers. I was extremely impressed with Erinn Miller, running for District 3, and Melinda Gneiting, running for District 5. Both candidates are extremely well qualified as they are already actively involved in the Douglas County schools. Both are community minded parents with children who are currently attending and/or have already graduated from DHS. They are articulate, educated, and eminently qualified to work with the existing trustees to move our school district to fiscally responsible success and will work with DCSD staff to provide a well supported educational environment for all students. They both shared information that was so accurate and well researched as to the failure of the existing school board majority (Burns, Jensen, Dickerson and Englekirk) who have cost the taxpayers of Douglas County hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary legal fees due to hiring, against the minority school board members (Gilkerson, Kangas, Wagstaff) and the tax paying constituents input, a DUI attorney that has no school board experience and has failed to properly support and protect our district from expensive, excessive, unnecessary litigation. The legal quagmire Joey Gilbert Law (DUI & personal injury expertise) has placed our district in has been extremely costly and has deprived our schools of necessary safety improvements (fence encircling DHS to protect students & staff) because his outrageous legal bills are putting our budget for student safety measures out of reach. Both Miller and Gneiting research, attend and participate in our school board meetings and take the time to prepare to promote success for our students and support for the DCSD staff. Although the DCSB trustee office is a non partisan position all four candidates are conservative Republicans. Your responsibility is to vote for the best candidates for our school district. Antionette Casselberry has not been involved in our school district in any way, shape, or form except perhaps for a sports event and it was clear by her responses last night that she is totally unprepared or capable of performing under NRS requirements for this critical office. Englekirk has had 4 years and has failed miserably. He has stated time and time again, including under oath, that he does not have the time to participate in the school district and, without shame, stated that he has failed to perform his fiduciary responsibilities of reviewing and questioning accounts payables because there are not enough hours in his day. I am making my vote count for our students and our pocketbooks by voting for Melinda Gneiting and Erinn Miller. Please make the best choice for our students, staff and taxpayers by voting for a positive change in our school district.

Vote with your Heart

Editor:

Please vote for school board candidates Erinn Miller and Melinda Gneiting. It takes a lot of courage and commitment to run for public office. These women have students in Douglas County schools and a long history of active school support. This is a non-partisan race, and the most important consideration should be what is best for students, staff and school administration. A strong and thoughtful school system can deal effectively with difficult situations without weaponizing and making even more difficult issues surrounding gender and race. So please, vote with your heart and trust that those committed to the best interests of our children are the best candidates.

Douglas schools excel despite turmoil

Editor:

Douglas County voters face a critical decision in this year’s school board election. This election affects the entire community, even those without children in the public school system. As a first-time DCSD parent this school year, I’ve been paying close attention to the district’s performance, and despite the turmoil on the school board, Douglas County continues to excel. For the fourth consecutive year, DCSD has been ranked the #1 school district in Nevada by an independent organization, with Douglas County teachers ranking second across the state.

In fact, Douglas County ranked No. 1 five times in the past six years.

I prioritize my kids’ safety, education, health, and future above everything, so I was concerned about their transition to DCSD amid the chaos of a contentious school board. I watched recent school board meetings to form my own opinions, rather than relying on political flyers or hearsay.

What I saw were red flags and instances of behavior that would have been grounds for expulsion in our own schools. It was mind-blowing that three individuals with no prior affiliation with DCSD, and no children in the system (past or present), were elected to implement drastic changes that are countering the district’s proven success.

What was equally disturbing was the disregard for parents’ input at the meetings. Parents who stood up to influence decisions to focus on critical issues affecting the district, like staff shortages and teacher retention, were written off, dubbed trouble makers, and labeled with political slurs. This is not acceptable. Lest anyone be reminded that parents know what’s best for their children.

Other serious concerns include (1) the hiring of a personal injury lawyer with no education law experience at a cost nearly three times the district’s annual budget, (2) a costly public records lawsuit that could have been avoided by complying with the law, and (3) hours wasted monthly on non-educational issues. Our district must focus on fiscal responsibility and urgent issues affecting students and staff, not divisive, fear-mongering “dog whistle” politics.

I was hard pressed to find examples of anything the majority board members have accomplished in two years that have improved the school experience for kids, teachers, staff, administrators, district office, or parents. Instead, I saw the entire focus placed on chasing issues that are not present in Douglas County schools, all the while driving out key individuals whose leadership guided the district to rank No. 1 in the state.

I’m voting for candidates who truly have the best interests of our children and district at heart: Erinn Miller and Melinda Gneiting. These are candidates with skin in the game—parents with kids in the system—who prioritize the safety, education, health, and future of all students.

Before casting your vote, I encourage you to speak with DCSD teachers and parents to hear their thoughts. Check with people who will be impacted by this vote before checking a box.

Worried about the schools

Editor:

I worry about the future of our schools.

My wife and I moved to Gardnerville in 1995. Our two children attended and graduated from Douglas County School District. Currently, we have three grandchildren attending DCSD. My wife has either volunteered or worked for the school district the entire time we have lived here, and I was involved in coaching both girls and boys youth sports and scouting.

I was fortunate enough to be appointed and then re-elected twice to the Douglas County School Board. I would like to thank everyone in Douglas County who put their trust in me and voted for me.

I have served on the School Board for almost 7-1⁄2 years. It has been an honor to be a part of the best school district in Nevada. I have a profound appreciation and respect for the educators in our school district which has only grown during my time serving on the School Board.

During the first 5-1⁄2 years of my service, there were many difficult decisions to be made, but we had a very diverse and functioning board that always put the children first and supported our educators.

In the last two years of my service, with the new board majority, that has not been the case. The new majority has focused on a national political agenda rather than the needs of educating our children and supporting the great educators of our county. We need to put personal politics aside and get back to the business of educating our children. With the election coming up we have a chance to accomplish that.

There are two candidates running for our School Board who are long term residents of Douglas County. They have kids in our schools and have been involved in volunteering in our schools and youth sports.

I believe these two candidates care deeply about student education and about supporting our educators. I support and will be voting for Melinda Gneiting and Erinn Miller for Douglas County School Board.

Republican for Gneiting and Miller

Editor:

Thanks to the recent letter writers supporting Erinn Miller and Melinda Gneiting with thorough explanations of their top qualifications and participation in the Douglas County schools. The debate was very informative, too.

I, too, am a conservative Republican.

It’s been great living over 30 years in Douglas County and Lake Tahoe ‘s West Shore 20 years before that and it’s always important to vote for the better candidate.

I’m glad I can vote for the two women who already have helped Douglas County School District and are very knowledgeable re the entire school district. They are most valuable for a new board working for our kids and community with a positive future.

The debate was most informative. Many thanks to the always top moderators and our local sponsors The Business Council of Douglas County, Carson Valley and Tahoe Chambers of Commerce, The Record-Courier and Brian Kulpa Photography.

Some simple truths

Editor:

The upcoming Douglas County School Board Trustee election comes down to some simple truths.

First, PACs like Citizens for Douglas County Education and Nevada 1st want us to believe that our schools are broken, our test scores indicate that our students are not learning, and that Marxist, woke ideology is rampant in the curricula and instruction our students receive. They rely on small pieces of data and no real evidence to support their claims and innuendo. What they may not realize is the damage this approach has done and will do to our school district.

The truth is that parents need to speak out for their children and the quality of our schools.

They know the truth far better than people who just suggest that major problems exist.

Second, we have four candidates running for the two nonpartisan school board trustee openings. Mr. Englekirk has already shown his inconsistent views through his voting record, and he has admitted he does not have time to perform even the minimal duties we should expect from a committed trustee. Mrs. Casselberry is clearly aligned with the current board majority and will most likely vote with them and support the destructive direction they have set for our students, schools, and staff. Mrs. Gneiting has raised four children who have all attended Douglas County schools, and three of them are graduates and moving forward positively toward their life goals in large part thanks to the excellent education they received from our teachers. Her youngest child is a freshman at Douglas High, and Mrs. Gneiting wants the best for her and all students in our schools. Mrs. Miller has three children at George Whittell High School, two in middle school and her oldest, a sophomore. She is highly involved in boosters, parent groups, and she is a parent representative for the Health Advisory Committee.

Both Mrs. Gneiting and Mrs. Miller want rigorous educational opportunities for all students, including current and expanded career and technical options. The true dedication and commitment is clear.

Last, the current board majority’s actions speak loudly. They have focused on policies and politics. Look at the agendas and minutes from the last 21 months of school board meetings.

They have step-by-step dismantled our school district leadership, set policies to limit public input, and centralized decisions and power with the board. They have also made reckless and nearly disastrous hiring decisions that have cost the district financially and damaged the district’s reputation. The truth is that we deserve better, and that is why I and many of my fellow community members are supporting Melinda Gneiting and Erinn Miller for the two open trustee seats. They will prioritize our students, families, and staff in the decisions and votes they make, they will be present for and committed to our students and schools beyond just school board meetings, and they have the integrity to help reset a much more positive and productive direction for DCSD. That’s the truth.

Not much on ballot for District 1

Editor:

What a disappointing candidate selection for District 1 Commissioner Candidates. The incumbent is not a public servant, he’s a servant for wealthy special interest groups, and in my opinion a major factor in the eventual egregious departure of DCSD Superintendent Lewis, and the shameful aftermath. His personal grievances as a parent should have never been addressed publicly. I’ll stop there.

The NPP candidate, perked my interest, until I read up on his major public policy concerns, where he stated, “Social and economic equity involves tackling income inequality.”

Well I’m not sure what that means to everyone else, but it means Socialism to me. My wife and I worked our tails off since the ’80s to retire to a community like Douglas County. We want everyone to have what we have, but they have to work for it too.

The so-called Democratic candidate is a walking, breathing train wreck. I’m amazed that the Douglas County Democrats couldn’t find a moderate sensible candidate as an option, I may have been persuaded to consider that candidate over the incumbent.

So, with that said, I’m not voting for anyone for Commissioner district 1.

In closing, I’d like to state that I’m a registered Republican since voting age, and moved to Douglas County seven years ago, partial because I wanted to live in a conservative community. I’ve followed local politics closely since we arrived.

I admit I drank the Kool-aid and voted for the current school board majority, that was a mistake, so I support Miller and Gneitting for the school board.

Backing Obermayer

Editor:

Hats off to Erich Obermayr, candidate for State Assembly District 39, for stepping to the plate and giving voters a choice in this election. It is not an easy decision to run against an incumbent, particularly when you are a Democrat in a conservative district.

In researching the candidates through their websites and in their own written words, I learned that both candidates are residents of Lyon County, both are patriots, and both have shown a history of public service and community involvement. The incumbent touts a non-bending, conservative political philosophy, whereas Mr. Obermayr believes that “good government requires bipartisanship, compromise, and respect for the ideas of others.” Personally, I want to see our elected officials work across party lines to make government work for the people and to positively impact our lives.

Mr. Obermayr supports several issues that are important to Nevadans. He is committed to finding ways to make primary elections in Nevada more inclusive. For example, if you are not a registered Republican in Douglas County and if only Republicans are running for office, you may not have a say in selecting our County Commissioners. This is a long standing problem that needs a bipartisan solution.

A woman’s right to control her own health care has been protected in Nevada since 1990 by state law. Question 6 on our ballot, if passed, will be the first step in guaranteeing a woman’s right to choose in our state constitution. Obermayr is supportive of this amendment and he will always vote to keep government out of the bedroom and the private health decisions of an individual.

Mr. Obermayr will support common sense gun safety legislation. The worst mass shooting took place in Nevada when a lone gunman opened fire on people attending an outdoor concert in Las Vegas. While Obermayr supports the second amendment to the US Constitution, he is willing to consider and support legislation to keep firearms out of the hands of irresponsible or unfit individuals and criminals.

Personally, I want elected officials to work in a bipartisan fashion and be willing to compromise. After you do your research, I hope you will agree with me and vote for Erich Obermayr, State Assembly District 39.

Rosen insincere

Editor:

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is running scared. It’s hard not to miss an ad on TV about Jacky Rosen’s bi-partisanship achievements in the US Senate and for helping all Nevadans during the past 6 years. But wait, let’s examine her accomplishments.

There is nothing bipartisan about Rosen when she votes 98.5 percent of the time with the Biden/Harris disastrous policies orchestrated by Rosen’s boss, Sen. Chuck Schumer. Not one single Nevadan can claim that reversing the Trump era energy and immigration policies has made their life better.

The USA was energy dependent 4 years ago with cheap oil. Every segment of our industrial complex depends on cheap transportation. Agricultural depends on cheap oil. Yet Rosen supports the unrealistic green energy policies of her boss rather than fighting for a better life for all Nevadans.

Just ask any Nevadan how they enjoy paying $2 & $3+ more per gallon at the gas pump or paying 50% and higher for heating bills. Just ask any Nevadan if they like paying more for groceries because the cost of diesel has doubled which has hurt farmers who grow our food and truckers who deliver it. Just ask Nevadans who are trying to buy a new home about the high cost of building materials. Inflation may be down a bit, but prices continue to rise under Rosen’s policies.

Rosen has stood by and cheered on the Biden/Harris “open border” policy that has resulted in higher health and auto insurance rates, loss of entry level jobs to illegal immigrants, shortage of affordable housing, unsafe neighborhoods across the country, and the ruination of major cities across our once great nation.

Rosen is so petrified over losing her cush job in the U.S. Senate that she’s lying to Nevadans about the abortion issue. She claims that Nevada women will lose their reproductive rights if Sam Brown is elected. What Rosen fails to tell Nevada women is that the current law in Nevada permits abortion for any reason up to the six month of pregnancy and beyond if the health of the mother is in danger. This law was a result of a voter initiative some 30 years ago and can only be overturned by a vote of the people.

Jacky Rosen had an opportunity to speak up for Nevadans in the US Senate, but she rolled over because of partisan politics. Don’t be fooled by clever ads. Rosen is anything but bipartisan. She is a rubber stamp for the left’s failed policies. Our country is unsafe with Rosen in the Senate.

Nevadans need to face the reality that we are not better off with Jacky Rosen representing us in the US Senate. We need independent thinkers in our legislative branch who are not afraid to bring forth reasonable solutions and will not roll over for the leftist ideologies. Vote for Sam Brown who will be a thoughtful voice for all Nevadans.

Trump rehashing promises

Editor:

Trump’s economic policy is just a do over from 2016. He promised to bring hundreds if not thousands of businesses and manufacturing jobs back to the United States. He had four years to do it and he failed. He put tariffs on solar panels, washing machines at 30 to 50 percent. In 2018 he imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum from most countries. Then in June of 2018 they were extended to the European Union, and Mexico. These angered our trading partners, who then put retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods causing a 9.9 percent decline in U.S. exports. China implemented massive retaliatory tariffs against the U.S.. The U.S.’s trade deficit grew by $119 billion.

The workers in heavily Republican counties suffered the most because retaliatory tariffs focused on agricultural products. Trump had to use the Great Depression-era program, the Commodity Credit Corporation to pay up to $28 billion in bailouts to the farmers because again of his tariffs against our trading partners. A May 2019 analysis found Trump’s tariffs equivalent to one of the largest tax increases in the U.S. in decades. Other studies found that they reduced real income in the U.S., and adversely affected the GDP.

Not only did Trump’s tariffs hurt the ordinary U.S. citizens, but then his tax cuts that ended up benefitting the wealthy and corporations and decreased the income to the Treasury increasing the debt by $7 trillion dollars.

The Republicans and Trump’s administration then wanted to cut Social Security and Medicare and reduce or cut vital programs that help the poor and ordinary people.

These are the same things that Trump is promising if he is elected President again. Raise tariffs, by 10-20 percent across the board to other trading partners and increasing China’s tariffs by 60 percent. Guess who will again pay the price for Trump’s tariffs – U.S. citizens.

We will pay more for goods and food not only due to the Trump’s tariffs, but because of the retaliatory tariffs from other countries. Economists are saying Americans will again pay a national tax of about $3500 per year, unemployment will rise, inflation will rise, and we could head into a recession.

The Biden/Harris Administration increased the economy, brought jobs and manufacturing back and decreased inflation by implementing the Infrastructure Act, the Chips Act, and The Inflation Reduction Act. That is what we need to continue doing. Keep fixing our infrastructure, bringing out manufacturing home and fight Climate Change. Let us continue to build green energy and leave our grandchildren a better world then what we have now.

Trump incorrect about economy

Editor:

Of all the thousands of documented lies that Trump has told since descending the elevator in 2015, the most pernicious is the fable that he, and other Republicans, are better for the economy than Democrats. That is simply not the case. Republican advocate supply-side economics which benefits business and investors, Democrats gear their policies towards reducing economic inequity to the benefit of average Americans. It certainly was not a group of average American taxpayers to whom Trump bragged at Mira Lago that his tax cuts had made them a “whole lot richer.”

A quick look at the Bureau of Statistical Analysis proves that since 1948, Democrats have outperformed Republicans economically in real GDP growth, the inflation rate, unemployment and even in annal corporate profits. This last is especially true under Biden versus Trump where the growth rate for corporate profits was 2.8 percent under Trump and 9.9 percent under Biden. Real GDP grew 5.9 percent during Biden’s first year, the fastest rate since 1984. Amid record job creation, the unemployment rate fell at the fastest pace on record during Biden’s first year, from 6.4% in January 2021 to 3.9% by December 2021.

Trump promised almost every week in his administration would be “Infrastructure Week.” That never happened, but Biden and Harris passed an infrastructure act that includes the largest federal investment in public transit in history. The law includes spending figures of $105 billion in public transport. It also spends $110 billion on fixing roads and bridges and includes measures for climate change mitigation and improving access for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as improving broadband internet access. Nevada alone is expected to receive over $2.7billion over 5 years for roads and bridges and more for broadband and climate mitigation.

Trump’s plan for the future includes tariffs that would cost average household over $4,000 each.

Almost every economist says this would be a disaster for our economy and while the wealthy might survive the impacts, average Americans will not. It was Biden/Harris who lowered the drug prices for insulin and 10 other drugs with plans to do more and made it possible to save Medicare millions with the ability to negotiate prices. Project 2025 wants to end that because Big Pharma doesn’t like it. They would rather charge Americans $800 for a vial of insulin that costs $5 to manufacture. It is Kamala Harris who has laid out concrete plans for an “Opportunity Economy” that mitigates the corporate greed fueling high gas and grocery prices. Trump says he has a “concept of a plan.”

If you care about your household’s economy, the health of your family and the environment we all share, then you must pay attention to the facts and not to Trump’s lies and propaganda.
