Genoa, Nev. — Douglas County schools are closed today for the first snow day this winter as snow falls across the county. There might be another on Friday depending on what the weather does. Western Nevada College is on a two-hour delay this morning.

Road controls are in effect this morning from top to bottom of Douglas County. Chains or snow tires are being required on Highway 395 from Holbrook Junction all the way to Cold Springs north of Reno.

A vehicle vs. pole was reported right around 6 a.m. on Highway 50 in Zephyr Cove. Tahoe Douglas firefighters also responded to a report of wires down on Terrace View Drive north of Kingsbury.

Deputies responded to a report of a pickup going south in the northbound lanes of Highway 395 around 5 a.m. The driver must have recognized the mistake and headed into the right lanes because deputies didn’t spot any wrong way vehicles.

I measured 5 inches of light snow on my deck at 6 a.m. and it’s still coming down. That handles the 1-4 inches from the winter weather advisory that expires at 1 p.m. today. It could be more depending on what happens with the temperature.

That means we could see rain after 7 a.m. if the temperature even comes near the forecast 48 degree high temperatures. If that happens it’s going to get pretty soupy for the evening commute.
