A domestic dispute on Old Clear Creek Road just north of the Douglas-Carson line at 10:34 p.m. on New Year’s Eve eventually led to the death of a man who texted he would ““shoot it out” with deputies if they responded.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said just a few minutes before midnight, deputies tried to contact the man a short distance from the home and there was an exchange of gunfire before he barricaded himself in a pickup.

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies, Washoe Tribe Police and Carson City Fire Department and tactical paramedics also responded.

“From 11:55 p.m. to 12:15 a.m., deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect from a distance, but the barricaded suspect refused all instructions,” Furlong said. “At approximately 12:17 a.m., the suspect emerged from his barricaded vehicle position reportedly armed with a handgun and a second shooting took place. Tactical paramedics attempted to render immediate medical aid to the suspect but determined he was dead at the scene.”

No other injuries were reported. The man was released to the Carson City Coroner for transfer to the Washoe County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

In accordance with officer-Involved shooting protocol, the Nevada State Investigations Division assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation, while the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducts its own internal affairs investigation into the matter.

Furlong said five deputies and two sergeants were placed on standard administrative leave following the shooting. None of the officers were injured in the incident.
