Gingerbread house contest winners announced

The Carson Valley Arts Council announced the winners of its sixth annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. The panel of judges proclaimed the competition was extremely difficult to judge given the vast array of creativity involved in this year's entries. But once the aroma of gingerbread cleared from their heads, winners in the four categories were finally declared.

Eulogy for 2010

When a year comes to an end and a new one begins, our thoughts naturally turn to things related to the time frame in which mortals live. We call it the past, the present, and the future. A definition of time would go something like this: a measurable period during which an action of condition exists or continues.

Public speaking offered through 4-H

The 4-H program has a history of turning out outstanding public speakers. If your children get the jitters when they have to make presentations at school, Cooperative Extension's free Speaking With Confidence 4-H Program may be what's needed for them to conquer their fears and learn public speaking skills. The course will be held 4-5 p.m. Mondays Jan. 31 - April 4 at the Douglas County office of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.

Celestial event caps off the year

This week marked a rare occurrence. Late Monday night into early Tuesday morning brought a spectacular total eclipse of the moon. That same Tuesday, the winter solstice arrived. Astronomers note that the last time these events occurred on the same day was 372 years ago, on Dec. 21, 1638. The next time the winter solstice and total lunar eclipse happen on the same calendar day will be Dec. 21, 2094.

A weed in its native land of Mexico, how did the poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima, come to represent Christmas? One legend claims that a poor Mexican girl, Pepita, had no gift to give the Christ Child at Christmas services. This made her very sad.

The Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School Choir and Desert Steel Drum Band under the direction of Tammy Owens will be featured in the "John Tyson's Christmas Special," airing 11 p.m. today on KOLO-TV Channel 8.
