Adult and teen ballroom dancing in Genoa

There is only about one more month left to do an open burn and last weekend was almost the most perfect weather conditions to do so. I have so much respect for the firefighters when I light the pile on fire especially with the dry tumbleweeds at the bottom. They just take off and I stand back as far as I can.

Innocence lost

Airport weight limit

Controversy continues to surround the airport and the November ballot question for voters to approve a new airport ordinance, which raises aircraft weight limits from the 30,000 pounds maximum approved in 1984 and 50,000 pounds approved in 1992 to whatever the FAA says it is, currently at 75,000 pounds.

Nevada Army National Guard returns to home soil

About 85 Army National Guard soldiers from Northern Nevada are on home soil after a year of duty in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. The Calvary (CAV) and the 1864 units returned to Las Vegas last week. The CAV flew into Reno on April 1 while the 1864 flew in on April 3.

The 10th annual Big Mama's Show & Shine featuring cars, music, food and fun is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 8 at the Lampe Park Pavilion in Gardnerville. The event is a fundraiser for the Douglas County Senior Services Meals on Wheels program for homebound seniors.

Carson Valley Golf course is gearing up for its Junior Golf Spring Program for golfers age 5-16. The one-day Introduction to Junior Golf is April 17. Reading as a way of opening a dialogue

It is hoped that the Douglas County Reads community reading project will encourage discussion of important topics beyond the scope of most of our day-to-day lives. In that regard, "Three Cups of Tea" is an exceptional choice of books. Sierra Crest Academy is an asset to our community. It would be a travesty if Sierra Crest Academy were to close. Even if you don't have children that attend the school, there needs to be alternative education in every community. It is important to have a choice.
